The Island of Lanzarote

Lanzarote is formed by seven municipalities or boroughs: Arrecife (capital of the island), Haría, San Bartolomé, Teguise, Tías, Tinajo and Yaiza. The island of La Graciosa, with only five hundred inhabitants, belongs to the municipality of Teguise.

Arrecife

Arrecife, the Island´s capital is the commercial and administration centre of Lanzarote. It is also one of the chicest places with trendy bars and restaurants, and plenty of shops which are mainly centred around the main pedestrian street of Leon y Castillo.

Haría

Haria is one of the most fertile areas of Lanzarote being located in the wetter, northern section of the island. and is well known for the Valley of the Thousand Palms. The highest point on the Island known as "Las Peñas del Chache" is in Haria.

San Bartolomé

San Bartolome is a quiet village situated in the centre of the Island. There are many cultural buildings of interest located in the village. This borough also includes Playa Honda which is situated on the coast near the airport. Here you will find Deiland a large shopping mall, and many other large shops and supermarkets.

Teguise

Teguise, the old capital of Lanzarote has a very colourful and interesting history with many cultural places worth visiting. It has also been declared as a town of architectural and artistic value. Teguise is a charming, and in some ways, stately town with many attractions to draw visitors. The main one being the Sunday morning market which is a thriving hubbub of activity. The borough also includes Tahiche, Costa Teguise, Nazaret, and Caleta de Famara to name but a few.

Tías

Tias borough incorporates Puerto del Carmen, Tias, Macher, La Asomada and Conil to name a few. Tias village is very popular with a main street boasting many shops a large supermarket and many fine restaurants.

Tinajo

Tinajo lies on the midwest of the Island and as a result of its climate and especially fertile soil is known as an important agricultural area. Tinajo borough also includes La Santa, an ancient fishing village and home to Club La Santa, a favourite venue among top international, professional sportsmen and women.

Yaiza

Yaiza borough incorporates the most southern part of the Island including Playa Blanca and the famous Papagayo Beaches. Yaiza village has remained untouched by the changes of modern life and the influx of tourism to Lanzarote. You will find many quaint Canarian bars and restaurants in Yaiza as well as some interesting architecture in the form of houses and churches.
